Designed to reduce moderate to deep frown lines and crow's feet, BOTOX Cosmetic is unique because it works within the facial muscles to limit movement of the skin. Under ordinary circumstances, facial wrinkles develop because the skin of the face folds and tucks when the individual squints or frowns. Over time, this repeated movement of the skin leads to lines that are visible even when the person's face is relaxed.
Physicians inject BOTOX Cosmetic into the muscles that control these expressions. The cosmetic releases a chemical known as acetylcholine, which temporarily inhibits muscular activity in the area. This in turn protects the skin from folding and creasing and allows existing wrinkles to smooth. The effect typically lasts an average of three to four months, though some patients may see results up to six months after treatment.
