LAVIV is the first FDA-approved treatment to use a patient’s own fibroblasts to reduce wrinkles around the nose and mouth. Fibroblasts are skin cells that produce collagen, which lends firmness to connective tissue such as the skin.
The fibroblasts are extracted from an individual’s skin sample then cultured and multiplied in a lab. Subsequently, they are injected into the nasolabial folds over the course of three treatments at intervals of three to six weeks. LAVIV has also been successfully used to smooth moderate to severe skin depressions associated with facial acne scars.
