Treatment for abnormal veins depends on the severity of the abnormality. Laser therapy is a common and effective treatment for removing veins, particularly those smaller than 3 mm. During laser therapy, a dermatologist will send a strong burst of light into the vein causing it to fade and ultimately disappear. No needles or incisions are used in laser therapy, and patients are typically able to return to normal activities the same day of the procedure. However, it generally takes between two and five treatments to remove abnormal veins suitable for the procedure.
